Career advice

by mnelson40 . Updated 14 years ago

Hello. Here is my situation. I am the Systems Administrator (SA) for my current employer. I have my degree in CIS, A+, Net+, and am an MCP. I am currently studying to obtain my Security +. My plans are to also obtain my CCNA and complete my Microsoft certifications (reading the most recent article that would probably be the MCTS or MCITP). This is what I would like career advice on, my role here is mainly as a Help Desk tech. My company has a contract with the Air Force and to fulfill that we are required to connect to the network of one of their bases. Since I am not an SA for that base I have zero access to any of the network resources that I’m guessing a SA would have (the various servers and other networking equipment). There are no servers at my office here. We do have a Cisco ASA device that we use to connect to the bases network but the AF will only allow me to view the Dashboard app for the device. I cannot make any configuration changes to it. My users also use a proprietary app to do part of their job so they are able to connect to the Citrix servers at my corporate office. If there are issues I do not have the ability connect to those servers and address them. I have to submit a ticket to the IT folks at corporate to have them fixed. I have asked what I need to do to get that access if possible and I don’t get a response. I am concerned that if I ever had to look for another job that I would not be able to get anything because of what I cannot do right now. I’ve looked at similar jobs for SA’s and I do not have any of the experience that most are looking for. I am trying to be loyal to the company I am with because they did give me a chance but at what point do I need to consider my growth and marketability? Thank you for any advice offered.
