Cat 5 vs. Cat 5e

How can you tell CAT5 and CAT5e wire apart? We have a mix of wires, some say CAT5e but much of the wire installed a year ago says just CAT5 and we were assured it was CAT5e. We’re considering 1000BaseT but a major rewiring would definitely make it less feasible.
