cd drive

hi there i was wondering if somebody could help?for some reason my my cd drive is only reading cd-roms,i have tried audio cds blank ones and dvds but it is just saying insert disk.i dont have a clue what is wrong with it and was wondering if i should try buying a new hardrive.
