CD not accesible device is not ready

My pc can see the drive but errors not accessable drive not ready when clicked on.
It is a wearness cdd-620
On the web site it has firm ware update but when I tried using it it had no exe file and it failed. It took unplugging the PC and many hours to get the pc to boot again. It would only boot in dos and said waiting to load dos program. It seems like this was only for a dos driver. I use win 98. In device manager it says no driver files are required or loaded for this device. When I click update it shows a mscdrom.inf file. …help
