CD-RW with or without CD-ROM

I am adding a CD-RW to a computer. Is it necessary or even a good idea to keep the current CD-ROM also in the computer? I understand that the RW should be connected to the Secondary IDE port on the motherboard so the CD-ROM could be set as slave with the hard drive Primary IDE port. Any other issues I should be aware?
