Certificate on IAS server?

I am puzzled about the certificate needed on the IAS server. If I have the check box unchecked on my XP client to “check server validity” does the certificate on the IAS server still come into play? What are the advantates of having the IAS server have a certificate installed? If it’s security, i’m not really concerned since on local LAN..
