Change COM1 to COM4

I have a laptop running XP SP3 with a 9-pin RS232 port. I am running an application that reads data from a medical device into the laptop’s 9-pin serial port. The application is hard coded to look for COM4 on the laptop, but when I looked in in the Device Manager of the laptop, it shows Communication port (COM1), I/O range 03F8 – 03FF, IRQ 4.

I have not been successsful in reading any data and wondered if it Is because the laptop is configures to COM1. Is it possible to reconfigure COM1 to COM4?
