Changing Novell client to Microsoft

We have recently changed over our network from a Novell platform to Windows 2000 server. Consequently we changed the client on the workstations from Novell to Microsoft. However afterwards the workstations ran extremely slow. By reformating the harddrive and then installing the Microsoft client the workstations performed at an acceptable level. Is there a more time effective solution to our problem?
