Chassis fan – Dell PowerEdge

Who has experience of generic replacement of Dell fans? It seems you have to have the right part, because the connectors are not the standard ones you get on (say) Intel motherboards. Also it looks like the fans run at 5V, not 12V like all the generics I see listed.

I have an elderly PowerEdge 600 which is still in working order (except for the fan) and perfectly suited to the application I want to use it for – a WinFax server.

Except Dell won’t help me without the old part. “Spares” doesn’t sell fans, “Service” only “repairs” parts that you have (even if repairing involves swapping out). The old part is missing – seems the original owner of this machine threw the part away (it was making a noise) and replaced the m/brd. Now I am trying to resurrect the original configuration and can’t fit an OEM fan without doing a major hardware hack.

I would chance it without fans but the BIOS complains at startup, requires “F1 to continue” because there are no fans connected. It seems Dell’s answer is to throw the whole computer away, but I’m sure there must be a better way!
