Circles not ovals are needed

by lliefveld . Updated 19 years ago

We purchased a new PC for my husband, who does CAD design. It’s critical that circles are round and squares are square. Our video card is ATI Radeon X1650 Pro. We originally bought an LG 22″ widescreen monitor, with a native resolution of 1680×1050.

He loved the monitor, but when the resolution was set so he could actually SEE the words, circles looked like ovals and squares looked like rectangles. Based on everything I could find, that should be fixed by changing to native resolution… which I did. He still swears there is distortion (personally, I couldn’t tell). We returned the monitor, and purchased a smaller 19″ LCD monitor with a more traditional aspect ratio. But I have a couple of questions:

1) Should changing to native resolution actually fix the distortion problem? Or is it true that there would still be some distortion?

2) Is there another solution or fix?

3) Do larger monitors exist that have either a 4:3 ratio or a 5:4(preferred) ratio? All the large monitors I can find seem to have a wider range in the aspect ratio.
