Cisco 48 port Switches?

A while ago i bought a Used Cisco Caytalist XL 3500 48 port switch online, so i could learn the language of the switch and know how to program them if i ever needed to. Well i got an adapter with it 1000base that goes into a slot in the switch, my question is does that change the entire switches ports from 100base to 1000base?
