Cisco 831 : ip addresses may not be configured on L2 links

Hi there,
Can any one please help to configure the ethernet ports of a cisco 831.
It gives me the following error when I try to configure the fast ethernet port.
ip addresses may not be configured on L2 links
Is there a way around????
Please help
