Cisco ASA 5500 or PIX 501

Do I need to have Cisco ASA 5500 SSL/IPsec VPN Edition in order to have a secured and encrypted VPN?

Can I do that with a Cisco PIX 501 instead?

What is the different between these 2 Ciscso appliance?
