Cisco PIX Firewall: Out of box security?

by lebradbury . Updated 23 years, 7 months ago

I just bought a Cisco PIX 501 for my dad’s home business, (basically, a few PCs on a home network). He has client information on one of the PCs, and wanted it to be protected, (as well as wanted a NAT solution for the network to share the cable modem connection). Here are my questions:

1) What (if any) out of the box modification do I need to perform to ensure that the network is adequatly protected?

2) Are their any default admin passwords that need to be changed, (I haven’t logged into the firewall yet)?

3) How concerned do I need to be about future security flaws in the CISCO PIX software?

4) Is there a newbie guide for logging into the PIX for the first time? I’ve RTFM and still can’t figure out how to SSL in via IE6. Is there a primary step I first must do? Is it even necessary for me to log in?

I had read that this was a great plug-in-and-forget firewall, but I don’t want to find out there was something obvious that I failed to do….

Thanks!
