Click on .doc won’t start Word

I received Word 2000 preinstalled on my Compaq laptop. I uninstalled Word 2000 and installed Office Professional 97, which included Word 97. Now when I click on a .doc document, a window pops up with Windows Installer trying to reinstall Word 2000to access the document. The .doc extension is correctly referenced to winword.exe in the windows explorer file types. Any ideas how to remove this reference to Word 2000, and back to Word 97?
