Communications Failure

After installing a new disk drive, reloading Win98, reloading NIC and Modem drivers, Configuring both NIC and Modem, I have these problems:

Modem will not dial
NIC will not ping router gateway, but will ping remote IP
PC cannot find HP LaserJet4050 connected to LAN with HP JedAdmin utility
Win 98 will not shutdown

LAN consists of of several PCs and HP4050 connected to router…All other PC on this LAN work great…Any suggestions??
