Compaq 6500 / Win2K / Hotswap Drives

I have a Compaq Proliant 6500 PPro/200 with 2 processors with Windows 2000 installed. There is not an Array card installed, I am using Windows software raid at the moment.

My question is what is necessary to shutdown a harddrive to enable me to remove it while the server is running (i.e. hotswap). Now, I know you can do this with the PCI cards, but how do you do it with the drives? Is this option only avalible with the Array card? I have tried disabling the drive, and removing the drive in the hardware device list. Neither worked.
