Compaq Evo D310 On board speaker

I have a new Compaq Evo D310 in my office. There is an on-board speaker, however, the machine makes no sound, not a chirp. I have spoken with Compaq twice and their reply was that I need external speakers, and the onboard speaker is made for the use of external speakers. It was hard for me to understand the tech because his english wasn’t that good. If anyone has a solution or comments or a direction for me to take to get to the bottom of this problem please let me know. Thanks….Michele
