Compaq laptop locked floppy.

by progfordummies . Updated 23 years ago

I am cleaning up old files on a Compaq laptop but I cannot access the A: drive. When I put a disk in, any disk..the message comes up saying the disk is not formatted, would you like to format now? I pop the disk into another laptop and it works fine. I went into the device manager Win98SE, and there are no conflicts. I went into the properties and checked off the box ‘disable in this profile’, at the suggestion of MS. I then rebooted but to no avail. I uninstalled the printer and then reinstalled using the ‘add new hardware’ option. It still does not want to read the disks, and sometimes it says that the disk is “locked by a device” and to unlock it. I checked the antivirus software to make sure it did not have the floppy restricted but no luck. When I look at the status of the drive it says ‘this device is working fine.’…or something like that. Please help. Thanks.
