Computer Image Documentation

I have been tasked to create a single computer image for a company of approximately 1500 machines. The creation, testing and packaging (I will being using SMS) is not a real problem. The problem is I need to document the baseline settings of the image and any changes I make when I need to update the image later on. Are there any good templates, white papers etc. on image documentation (change management)?
