configuring a 3560 gbic port

I have a 3560 switch with a known working gbic in gi0/2. On the other end is a netgear (for the time being) gigabit fiber media converter. The media converter displays a fiber link, but the gbic does not initialize. I shut the switch down, installed the gbic, brought the switch back up, put it in trunk mode, did a shut/no shut command, and everything I try does not work. Any suggestions? The media converter will be replaced with a 3560 switch, but I need to get them up immediately. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!
