Configuring PPP on Cisco routers (2900)

Im trying to establish a connection between to cisco routers via a serial interface using ppp encapsulation. I configured the ports and verified i had a correct IP address. My problem is I cant ping my own serial port, and I keep the serial port line & protocol keep changing from a down state to up state…???
