connect crashed laptop to desktop

by rossanna . Updated 22 years, 12 months ago

My Sony Vaio WinXP has a corrupt system32 which prevents me from booting to windows. I foolishly did not have recovery system installed, can’t get to safe mode and ‘last know good config’ doesn’t work. Sony Vaio doesn’t have a ‘repair’ option, only ‘recovery’, which means wiping disk clean and reinstalling to original state. I can replace almost everything, but I need to save a few files. I was told to get a Laptop HDD adapter and connect to my desktop (PII 450MHz dual boot 98SE/2K Pro system) and back up files that way, but was not told how. Can’t find a tutorial on this subject anywhere on the internet.

Problem: Using the Laptop HDD adapter, I connected laptop HD to desktop via the IDE cable that is attached to desktop HD. It’s when the power plug gets connected (to the extra coming out of the power supply) that my desktop freezes. Am I not connecting the power plug to the right connector? As soon as I unplug the power to the adapter, my desktop is fine. Am I connecting the adapter correctly? Do I need to set jumpers? If so, how?

I also read online somewhere to connect everything and then turn computer on so the laptop drive could be found, but that results in a “no os found” message.

What am I doing wrong?
