connect G3 mac to XP with cross over

I am trying to connect my G3 mac to Windows XP.I am wanting to use a cross over cable .I can not understand the XP at all ,the mac has ethernet and the Pc has ethernet card. thanks for any help you can give me .I am a rookie. Ron
