Connecting a computer with Wondows NT to

I’d like to connect a desktop which is running windows NT to my laptop which is running Windows 98 with a serial null modem so that I can share files
I’ve tried to do it by having the NT machine run a remote access service on the com1 port and trying to make the 98 machine act as a direct cable communication guest. However, the 98 mahine tells me the the connection is not functioning correctly, that I should try another connection or try again later.
I know that the ports are working becauseI can make them communicate using hyperlink.
I’d appreciate any suggestions
