Connecting HP LaserJet 6p

user trying to connect hp laserjet 6p using an parallel to usb adapter. the printer/driver is recognized, I can add the printer but it won’t print the test page. It just hangs saying its in the queue. I have cancelled the job. delete the printer and try again. nothing works. I have a laptop that doesn’t have a parallel port connection so I am using parallel to usb. any idea?
