Connecting notebook to desktop lan w/XP

I am a real novice and want to connect my IBM ThinkPad to my desktop computer through my LAN. My desktop is the host computer; connected to the internet via a cable modem. I’m using Windows XP, but don’t know how to accomplish this. I’ve got the cable to connect my laptop to the cabel modem. Can anyone please help? Thanks!
