Consolidating Servers

One of the biggest challenges in consolidating servers is to ensure application compatibility. Having said that, does anyone know of any tool out there that can perform snapshots of all system files before and after a new application is installed? This snapshot will allow me to see the changes made to the system files after the new application is loaded, thus allowing me to troubleshoot any errors and if needed, to restore from my backups.
