Copying files from one server to another

I am trying to copy some files and folders from an old Win NT server to a new Win 2k3 server. When I access the old server from the new one and copy the files and paste them in a local folder of the new server the files/folders get copied but they have the READ ONLY attribute on them and I cant get rid of it. The original files dont have this attribute on them. What am I doing wrong? I need to find a way to get these files copied over and since they currently exist on a Win NT machine I cant use a USB and the machine does not have a writtable CD on it.
