Corrupt CD-ROM files in Windows XP

I have lost both my CD-ROM and CD-RW. They appear in Device manager but i get an error about corrupt driver files and a code 39. After I looked the code up I followed the suggestion from MS Knowledge base but that didn’t resolve the issue. I remember there being a problem with the Plug and Play Enumerator controller or something, I think I uninstalled that as well, is there a way to get that back? Or am I S.O.L?
