Corrupt Data Files on an External HDD, Why? how do i get them back?

So here I am at my helpdesk Imaging computers with Norton Ghost. We dont have a ghost server yet (currently working on getting one and learning how to impliment it) so we store our images on an External HDD. I was going through and imaging computers and after about 5 computers completed the image, it would not let me image anymore. The image was good, so that is not the problem. But when I put the external into another computer to see what was up, it said it required a chkdsk /f on the drive. I did and it said that folder was corrupted and then after the chkdsk was done, the folder was gone. The space is still being taken up but the folder is gone even though it said it fixed the error. Anyone have a clue? I am lost and had about 20 images on that hard drive. It would cost me so much time to make them again. PLEASE HELP!!!
