CPU speed and routers

What exactly does the CPU speed on a router affect? General throughput, streaming audio/video, downloads, the number of users, something else?

Any info on this is appreciated. Link to docs are acceptable as well but would prefer a summary.

Iam speaking of any router from a Cisco to a freesco (http://www.freesco.org).
