crossover cable file sharing troubles

im having trouble sharing files between two computers using a crossover cable (something is screwed on the old windows 98 and it wont read flash drives and other external hard drives) my windows xp computer detects the connection when i plug in the crossover cable but it says there is an error because “the network did not assign a network address to the computer” any suggestions?
