D-link router & satellite modem

Hi
I have a surfbeam satellete modem and a D-Link router. Most days I have 0 upload when doing the speed test. Can anyone help me with this? The internet company says the satellite modems are made to connect to the pc directly and that routers can cut off the upload. Is this true?
