Data Speed on network

We are using 100Mbps Ethernet NIC, and 10/100 Mbps Switch, and useing GHz cables. but data speed, which shows in XP Network icon is just 0.5% maximum, when I m doing browsing or mailing or such as other work.. why? how can I Increase my network speed, and what is problem?
