Hi all….I’m brand new to servers and server admin, and although I am not responsible for the actual maintenance of my group’s server, I am finding more and more problems with it.
The most recent issue is the level of fragmentation that I’m seeing on two of the three drives. I have the C:\ at 59%, and the F:\ at 81%. I am hoping someone can answer my questions as I’m working on an email now and having this information would be a huge help:
1) What level should a server be at that houses a high-activity SQL 2000 server?
2) How often should a defrag be done? I’m assuming I will need to monitor this and base the schedule on how often the levels go about the level in question 1, but what frequency are people using now?
3) What are some of the symptoms of a highly fragmented server? I would assume things like slowdowns, server instability, data loss/corruption, server overheating (as it has to work harder to get the data), and incomplete/corrupt backup files.
4) If I have 130 Gb used up of 150 Gb, and I’m running at 81% fragmentation, is there a way I can estimate how long the defrag will take?
5) Is there anything else I should know before sending out the email to my manager?
Really appreciate any advice and suggestions.
