Denon AVR1700 problem with running tv/dvr through surround with optical cab

I have a Denon AVR1700 and I want to hook up my tv / cable DVR so I can listen in Dolby surround. I tried an optical cable out from the DVR to the input on the Denon and no luck. Any advice?
