I was recently called home by my roommates to fix our wireless network. Being new to the field and currently enrolled in a MSCA certification program, my friends depend on me for all of their computer needs. Usually it just takes me unplugging the cable modem and wireless router for 5 seconds and plugging it back in and everything works fine. After that didn’t work I tried to configure the wireless connection through my friends Gateway Laptop with Windows XP Pro and found it to be seriously infected by hundreds and hundreds of viruses and trojans. It literally took me a good 6 hours to get his laptop to work normally without having a hundred error messages (thanks to McAfee Security Suite). While McAfee was going to work I figured I would try with my laptop. Keep in mind that the other computer in the house which is a desktop also has no connection to the internet. I had the same luck. Internet Explorer kept saying I was not connected to the internet even though the signal was strong and showed no signs of malfunction. Packets were being sent out but no packets were being received. I then gave up and assumed there was a problem with the cable provider. I left to my girlfriends house and brought my laptop with me. She also has wireless internet and her laptop was working fine. Until I opened my laptop and tried to connect. Again my laptop showed all signs were normal and that I was connected to the internet while still getting the same error message from IE. So I try to get online with her laptop and now she has the same problem. My guess is that we are now all infected. My question is has anyone ever heard of this kind of virus and if so how do I fix it?
