detecting a second monitor for extended desktop

Well, i only have one monitor output on my vista computer as far as i can tell, so i bought a y-cable and i used that to put my two monitors onto the system. they clone but when i open up the GMA Driver it doesnt have the second monitor detected, it says i only have one. do i just have to install a new monitor port or something? does the y-cable not work for that?
