DHCP and Client

I have an NT4.0 Client running DHCP and has been given a 30 day lease. My DHCP server was down and the client pc was unable to contact this server. The client IP stack was dropped after 15 min. Why would the client PC drop the IP stack when its lease was for 30 days? Any help would be appreciated
