Dialing Modem

My modem instantly dials a connection as soon as the O/S boots up, therefore, I can’t work on any applications without being connected to the net.
I’ve checked all the settings and nothing is set to automatically connect but can’t seem to find the program that might be initiating the connection or an orphan file that may be lingering from a previous program that initiates the connection. Help
