difference between an sms sent off a computer & 1 sent from a mobile phone

what is the difference between an sms sent off a computer and one send from a mobile phone? Can a service provider like Vodafone tell the difference, especially when there is suspicion of criminal activity?

Help appreciated! Thanks! Sean.
