difference between switching & routng

I would like to know whether switches are faster than routers.
We have intel 510T switches on our network connected to a central router “intel 550T routing switch”, & a database server connected to the router. We want to connect the database serverdirectly to the switch.Does this affects the speed and performance for the clients.
