Direct Cable Networking

I have a problem. I want to network a computer (Windows 98SE) and a laptop (Windows 2000 Professional) using a parallel cable for sharing files and printers. I already have a parallel cable and tried the connection but was not successful. I deleted all connections and want to try again but also want to make sure I’m doing it the right way. If you can help, please resond to this question. Thanks.
