Disadvantages of using a Class A Network scheme

by normh3 . Updated 17 years, 5 months ago

I have a client that we inherited from another IT support company several years ago. The clients campus consists of two buildings connected via underground fiber. There are numerous unmanaged swiches that do have the capability of being managed. The environment itself consists of 4 servers, 25 or so workstations, a half dozen networked printers and a handful of other networked devices. When the original IT support company set this up, for whatever reason, they decided to use a Class A subnet mask. It may have been because the client originally had a VOIP phone system, which has since been replaced with a standard PBX, due to the fact that the vendor could never get it to operate to the clients satisfaction.
I am by no means a Network Design Engineer and am curious to know if there are any disadvantages to leaving this network in its current configuration. There are plans to configure a few of the switches so that they can be managed.
