Disappearing E-mails

I have Exchange 5.5 setup in our office with about 10 users. It seams to work well as I can set up our web site to forward to a “free account” and then set up Outlook to retrieve them. So it looks like We have a “real” .com address. Anyway, We have a cable modem plugged into the hub (I know, Proxy server WILL be set up very soon) and the Exchange server gets a IP address from the ISP. This seems to work very well so far, last night I tried to access the Exchange server from my home network, I also have a cable modem. After logging on and attaching to the exchange server I saw my E-mails disappearing! I quickly disconnected. Tried one more time and same result. Went to the shop and they were gone. I am setting up a test account but until I figure this out I do not trust setting anyone else up. Any suggestions?
