Here is my current situation. I am the administrator in a multitiered
administration environment… Now the confusing part: I DON’T administrate
the DHCP server for my domain. That is taken care of another administrator
in a different part of the organization (and a different location). Now.
The DHCP server hands out two DNS IP addresses (IP’s are changed for security
reasons), those IP’s are: 192.168.105.39 and 192.168.105.163. My location
has a DC/DNS server (W2K3 R2 with AD integrated) and I have been trying like
mad to use GPO to set the policy for DNS Servers located at Computer
Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network/DNS Client/DNS Servers. The
IP addresses that I need to read: 192.168.13.125, 192.168.13.127, and
192.168.105.163. I put this in place, run gpupdate /force on my XP Pro SP2
test machine and it doesn’t take.
When I run ipconfig /all, it still shows the DNS servers that the DHCP
server is giving out. I have looked in the registry to see if the key at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient are there. They are
there and I still am unable to perform an nslookup for an unqualified
single-label name such as myserver.
I have also enabled the DNS Suffix Search List and in writing this question,
have noticed that it too does not work on the client. It is supposed to show
(again, names are changed for security reasons): organization.domain.lcl,
domain.lcl, department.local, and domain.com.
I also have noticed this on another domain I am an administrator on and this
is a Server 2k domain that I thought was working correctly.
Both domains are separate.
Am I going about this the wrong way, or do I have something mis-configured?
Oh, the DNS Suffix Search List is comma deliminated with no space between
the entries and the DNS Server list is space deliminated. Thank you for your
