Domain to workgroup

While a computer running xpsp2 was joined to a domain, none of the user names had permissions to change the date and time, not even admin or administrator. So, I thought to make it a workgroup and then use admin privliges. When I rebooted, I could not sign on with any user name that I had. What went wrong?
