Dos on XP troubleshooting

Hi

I’m running a dos based utility on Windows XP SP2 and the program works just fine. my problem starts when an XP program pops up (like outlook reminder or microsoft updates) and it automatically throws me out of my Dos program
how can I prevent that from happening
