“Dr. Strangetweet, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Ignore Social Media”

Often someone will approach me looking for an automated solution to a problem. In these cases one of my first questions is usually, “What process are you using now? How are you doing this manually?”

I’ve finally got it through my thick skull that I don’t have to use every new utility and tool that’s available on the Internet, especially the ‘social networking’ ones. Most of these tools do things I’m not doing ‘manually’ in non-electronic formats. I was trying to use these tools as electronic solutions to problems and needs I don’t have in my off-line life. I don’t concern myself with on-line gaming, movies, or music services because I don’t engage in those activities in the real world; I realized social media fall into the same category.

I feel much better now.
